More than half of your donors from last year won't give again.
The sector-wide donor retention rate is 47% — meaning more than half of all donors who gave last year will not give again this year. Only 28% of first-time donors give a second gift. These numbers are getting worse, not better. The technology failure that underlies these numbers: 36% of nonprofits use no CRM at all, tracking donors in spreadsheets or email.
The problem
The CRM fragmentation problem and the Salesforce problem LA nonprofits know too well.
Of those using a CRM, 54% report incomplete or inaccurate donor data as a major obstacle to their fundraising. Staff build workaround systems in personal spreadsheets when the CRM fails them; when that person leaves, the institutional knowledge goes with them.
The Salesforce problem deserves specific mention because it affects so many LA nonprofits. Salesforce NPSP implementation costs $30,000–$100,000 for a small organization. Salesforce has since ended innovation on NPSP and is pushing nonprofits to migrate to Nonprofit Cloud at $60–$100 per user per month. Organizations that made a painful investment in NPSP are now being told to invest again in a migration. The defensible build is a bilingual CRM purpose-built for orgs serving LEP communities, with automated retention workflows built in from the start.

How we approach this
Bilingual CRM with retention workflows — built for orgs serving LEP communities.
Bilingual donor records
Donor profiles with preferred language field. Correspondence, acknowledgments, and appeals rendered in the donor's preferred language automatically. Spanish, Korean, Armenian, and Tagalog supported.
Automated retention workflows
Day-7 thank you call prompt, day-30 impact update email, 90-day re-engagement sequence for non-responders, 13-month lapse alert for donors who haven't given in over a year. Built in from the start — not bolted on.
First-gift conversion sequence
Dedicated automation for first-time donors — the 28% who give a second gift are driven by specific follow-up timing and messaging. Three-touch sequence informed by Fundraising Effectiveness Project research on first-gift conversion timing.
Donation history and segmentation
Full giving history per donor. Segmentation by cumulative giving, last gift date, program connection, and communication preference. Targeted appeal lists built in minutes.
Pledge and recurring gift tracking
Multi-year pledges tracked with payment schedule and outstanding balance. Recurring gift failure alerts sent to the development director before a donor lapses.
Salesforce migration path
For orgs with existing Salesforce NPSP data: structured export and migration of contact, donation, and campaign records into the new system. Field mapping documented and validated before any data moves. Note: Salesforce NPSP has a complex object model — migration is scoped separately from the CRM build and typically adds 6–8 weeks depending on data quality and customization in the source system.
